We're Hiring: Junior Designer →

jolby:

We are currently on the hunt for a multi-disciplined Junior Designer to join our small, but highly-efficient, team.

You:
Work well with others and you strive to create the best work possible with everyone on the team. You dive in when you’re needed and know when to take a step back. You can…

F-Yeah! My buddy just told me to get on this, sooo…I’m gonna work on my sales pitch since I certainly am not your typical design person.  You should apply too, make sure Jolby & Friends find the right fit.

"Mephisto" is next up on my copying of Shadow Type by Heller & Fili.  So I left out the apostrophes, I know, sue me.  They would really help in balancing the composition but I’m ready to move on.  This was a pretty great learning exercise because I made it twice.  The first time, my letter spacing was off and the shadow didn’t quite read right, plus I wasn’t happy with the first typeface I used (Gil Sans Bold).

Shadow Type

I checked out the book: Shadow Type, Classic Three-Dimensional Lettering by Steven Heller and Louise Fili last week and I’m pretty into it.  I’m pretty sure I’ve checked the book out previously but I’ve never drawn from it which is something I’ve been trying to do more of with things that I like.  That’s right, copying artwork. I think there is value in studying that which you like.  Just don’t go calling what you’ve done your’s, because it’s not.  It’s a copy, a study, a replication.

Here’s an ad for Blanat Inc. Gowns and I totally am digging it.  I thought it would be a sweet business card so let’s give it a go.

Here’s my copy of the original swapping out my details. I’m no typographer and could not find a match to the typeface used in a reasonable amount of time so I used Myiad Pro which is on my computer and is pretty close.  I thought I was close when I discovered Avenir by Adrian Frutiger but that was off too, good lesson in typographic history though for my time sidetracked by font hunting.

Inspired by findings from the Japanese grocery store, I decided to create a logo for a Japanese street food cart.  Here’s one of the logo’s I designed along with custom text.  I hope to add more to the project but for now I must move on.
