I checked out the book: Shadow Type, Classic Three-Dimensional Lettering by Steven Heller and Louise Fili last week and I’m pretty into it. I’m pretty sure I’ve checked the book out previously but I’ve never drawn from it which is something I’ve been trying to do more of with things that I like. That’s right, copying artwork. I think there is value in studying that which you like. Just don’t go calling what you’ve done your’s, because it’s not. It’s a copy, a study, a replication.
Here’s an ad for Blanat Inc. Gowns and I totally am digging it. I thought it would be a sweet business card so let’s give it a go.
Here’s my copy of the original swapping out my details. I’m no typographer and could not find a match to the typeface used in a reasonable amount of time so I used Myiad Pro which is on my computer and is pretty close. I thought I was close when I discovered Avenir by Adrian Frutiger but that was off too, good lesson in typographic history though for my time sidetracked by font hunting.
